Training and Clinical Support in Education Team
We are a team of experienced registered nurses who provide healthcare skills training in education settings across Gloucestershire. We work closely with the Children’s Community Nursing Team but are a separate service.
Competency training courses
Our competency training courses are designed to equip education staff with the knowledge, skills and confidence to safely support children and young people with healthcare needs.
Each course includes:
- Online theory training and assessment
- Practical teaching using manikins and demonstration equipment
- Practical assessment to ensure trainees can safely carry out the relevant care skills
Our training is skill-specific, rather than child-specific. Once a trainee has been assessed as competent in a particular skill, they can use that skill to support children with the same relevant care needs.
We also provide annual refresher training for trainees who have previously completed training with us and are still required to provide the relevant care.
We offer the following competency training courses within educational settings:
Special Educational Needs (SEND) schools
- Feeding (enteral) tube care, including gastrostomy, jejunal and nasogastric tubes.
- Administering blended diet feeds.
- Insertion of a gastrostomy stoma stopper.
- Administration of medication.
- Administration of emergency medication in the event of an epileptic seizure.
- Blood glucose testing for pupils who do not have diabetes.
- Using Vagal Nerve Stimulation (VNS) during an epileptic seizure.
- Reinsertion of a nasogastric tube (for registered nurses only).
Mainstream Schools
- Administering blended diet feeds.
- Insertion of a gastrostomy stoma stopper.
Nurseries
- Feeding (enteral) tube care, including gastrostomy, jejunal and nasogastric tubes.
- Administering blended diet feeds.
- Insertion of a gastrostomy stoma stopper.
Training safety
Once a trainee has completed their practical assessments, we work closely with them and their wider team to ensure accurate, safe, effective and consistent care. We supervise the delivery of care to the relevant child or children until the trainee has been assessed as competent able to provide the care independently.

Training Request Form
From the 2026/27 school year, a new NHS service will be introduced to help special schools support children with medical needs safely and confidently. This service will not replace your child’s existing healthcare teams, but will give schools better access to nursing advice, clearer guidance and improved training.
What the service will do
- Give schools quick access to nursing advice about children’s health related needs.
- Help support schools to keep care plans accurate and up to date.
- Support safe management of medications, emergencies and delegated health tasks through training.
- Provide guidance on risk assessments, safeguarding and attendance for children with medical conditions.
- Work closely with NHS teams and the Local Authority to ensure joined‑up support.
Where it will operate
Nurses will regularly visit the special schools that support children with ongoing or fluctuating health needs and will offer remote advice to others. They will not be based in schools full‑time.
What this means for you
- Your child’s school will have clearer, more consistent health advice.
- Care plans and risk assessments will be strengthened.
- Your child will continue to receive their medical care from their usual NHS teams.
This service is still being developed and will launch next academic year. More detailed information will be shared as we get closer to the launch of the service.
If you have questions in the meantime, you can contact: z.riley@nhs.net
