A new Day treatment Eating Disorders service for people living with an Eating Disorder in Gloucestershire is being launched by ²gether NHS Foundation Trust.

The new Adult Day Treatment Team, which opens on 28 February 2011, will provide county-wide support, individual therapy and support during meal time to help people living with an Eating Disorder. The team will also provide group therapy for family members and carers.

The new Day Treatment Service enhances ²gether’s existing Eating Disorder services which in August launched an intensive Home treatment Service for children and adolescents with an eating disorder.

Ian Milsom, Senior Clinician in the new Day Treatment Service said: “The aim of our new Eating Disorders Service is to ensure people are identified as early as possible and are helped to recover in the community with their friends and family around them.
It provides extra help close to home reducing the need for out of county hospital admission which can cause disruption to service users and their family’s lives. Where appropriate, intensive therapy is provided to help facilitate recovery. Our aim is to ensure people living with an eating disorder are able to lead a normal life again.”

The Day Treatment Service will offer support to service users, their families and carers at the Brownhills Centre, Cheltenham between 10am and 6:30pm weekdays.

Ian continued: “It can often take a long time for people with eating disorders to accept or even recognise there may be a problem. Treatment and support is often required over a period of months and years. This is why a high quality community-based service is essential.”

Referrals into the new service is through a family GP. People can also call the service direct and working with the GP, the Eating Disorder team will work with you to determine the most appropriate service for your needs.

The new service also runs support groups for people affected by eating disorders where clinicians from the Eating Disorders Service are on hand to help and offer advice and will answer any questions and provide helpful information about topics as they arise.

The adults and carers support group meet alternate Tuesdays 7.30pm – 9.00pm
The adolescents and carers support group meet alternate Thursdays 7.30pm – 9.00pm

To join either of the groups and for meeting dates please call 01242 634 242.
