Three Minor Injury and Illness Units (MIIUs) temporarily closed in March will remain closed for a further three months.
The closures of the MIIUs at The Vale, Dilke and Tewkesbury Hospitals were first announced in response to the Coronavirus outbreak.
On Tuesday (14 July) the decision to continue these temporary closures was ratified at a meeting of the county’s Health and Care Overview and Scrutiny Committee.
John Trevains, Director of Nursing, Quality and Therapies for Gloucestershire Health and Care NHS Foundation Trust, which provides the MIIUs, said: “While the rate of Covid infection in the county has been in decline, we remain in the middle of a national response to the Coronavirus pandemic which, as we have seen in other parts of the country, is subject to rapid change.
“We have a duty to our patients, staff and communities to take responsible action to both reduce the spread of infection and ensure that services we do provide are resilient, in terms of staffing and availability of resources. Therefore, we feel these continued temporary closures are sensible and we have ensured there are still MIIUs open which are reasonably accessible to most communities, although we do know this decision may inconvenience some. I hope that the public will appreciate that this is a decision we have not taken lightly and will support us in our efforts to do what is right for our communities, as well as our staff.”
While three MIIUs remain closed, the MIIUS below will continue to be open from 8am until 6pm, seven days a week:
- North Cotswolds, in Moreton-in-Marsh
We are closely monitoring the activity levels in our MIIUs and will endeavour to extend the opening hours until 8pm as soon as possible.
If you have symptoms of coronavirus, do not visit an MIIU. Follow the specific health advice found via www.nhs.uk/coronavirus and use NHS 111 online if your symptoms worsen.
